Hacked!

nirav January 25th, 2007

Somebody played a little hacking trick on me the other day. He used some Wordpress SQL injection vulnerability and changed the title of the blog!

I am hacked!

It was interesting to see this. I actually liked his efforts. Cleaning up the thing was not difficult and thankfully we did not have any left overs! WP is now upgraded to 2.1. That should make things better for now!

myFeedz - personalized feed reading

myFeedz Logo

Got to know of myFeedz today. It’s not a simple RSS reader application, or not a technorati clone. It understands and learns the kind of things you like to read, and presents them to you. You can specify the tags you are interested in and it will collect posts based on that. You can also let it know if it found something that was “off-topic” and does not interest you. It will try to avoid such items in the future. The look and feel of the site too is pleasing. And on top of this, it offers an RSS export facility, so you can set up the tags you are interested in, subscribe to the RSS feed and read all that in your favorite RSS reader.

Looks good. And if it does well on that “learning what you like” part, it can be a killer app!

Akismet not catching spam, popularity contest known issues

nirav December 17th, 2006

Been getting a lot more spam lately, and Akismet fails to catch them. Have 1000+ caught by Akismet, and 300+ which are spam, but not caught by Akismet. And that over the last 3 days. That’s too bad for Akismet, or too good for the spammers. Have re-activated HashCash plugin, so let’s see what happens in the next few days.

On the other hand, popularity contest, the plugin that shows the most popular posts on the right, has a known issue. WordPress seems to have an issue with spam comments. So the posts which have more comments, even if they are marked as spam and not shown, will come up higher on the list. So the list you see on the right, are mostly pages, that are hit most often by spammers!

Got to check if the latest version fixes this, else fix it myself! I am bugged by this bug! Anyone got any fixes?

Get off Spammers!

nirav April 30th, 2006

I wrote about comment spam I was getting on my blogs a while ago. I didn’t bother to do anything about it, but last week it just went out of hands.

I used to get about 250 spam comments everyday on both mehtanirav and TrustAndFreedom. The Magnet blog also gets lot of spam.

I didn’t want to install a Captcha on the blog as the server does not have GD support. And I fould WP-HashCash. It’s pretty simple to setup, does not require GD, and is 100% effective! I did not have any spam for the last three days!

I strongly recommend HashCash for anybody using WordPress!

Multilingual Applications

Magnet April 11th, 2006

Windoxs XP, OS X and Linux has just one thing in common they all are in English and probably that’s where the similarity between the three ends. However my aim is not to compare Windows XP with OS X or Linux but to highlight the fact that all big Corporations develop applications in English only and not in any other language even when it is estimated that more than half of the world’s population communicates in only 8 languages: English and Mandarin Chinese, Hindi (with Urdu), Spanish, Russian, Arabic and Bengali and finally Portuguese (Courtesy: unesco.org). There is no clear cut reason why English is so widely used, perhaps it is the dominant language in the United Kingdom, the United States, many Commonwealth nations including Australia, Canada, Malta, New Zealand and other former British colonies. Or perhaps the global influence of native English speakers in cinema, airlines, broadcasting, science, and the Internet in recent decades (Courtesy: Wikipedia)

I would love to see someone to come out with an OS or an application which is Multilingual and gives every language the due respect, which they deserve. What comes close to my mind is Utkarsh which is probably worlds first OS in a regional Language (Courtesy: Utkarsh)

I can’t stop myself from admiring the efforts IIT-Madras has made in developing Multilingual System which permit a uniform and language independent approach to designing computer applications supporting user interfaces in all the Indian languages ( Courtesy:iitm.ac.in)

Now we not only have the means but also a good reason to look beyond English and explore other languages. I would love to see more of Utkarsh in different languages.
